iPhone emoticons without hacking

Got an amazing link today from Ashot about this application that will allow you to send Japanese emoji icons to anyone with an iPhone — without hacking it! You all know I won’t jailbreak my iPhone :)

Anyways, it’s really simple. This is all you need to do:

#1. Get this $0.99 app called frostyplace from the iTunes store [ link ]
#2. Play with the app for a minute to activate, click on a story, etc
#3. Go into you settings -> General > International > Keyboards > Japanese
#4. Click the Emoji option to on!
#5. Text anyone with an iPhone and they’ll get your icons!

Want to see more close up photos? Check this flickr set for more screen shots of all the icons.

** Update: If it doesn’t work the first time, continue playing with the app. Be sure to click on a few stories and click on the bottom two icons. Also, you must be on firmware 2.2 for this to currently work.

** IMPORTANT: If you wish to upgrade your phone to 2.2.1 firmware, please take note that you MUST install frostyplace FIRST as it will not work after the upgrade. They are currently working on a fix with the next version, so for the next 24 hours the application is free!

I have a lot of emails and comments on this thread confirming that the current alternative app is the Touch Dial Emoji which is $3.99. To use this application if you’ve already updated your firmware, do the following:

??? Install Touch Dial Emoji version 1.2
??? General settings -> Touch Dial -> Enable smiley icon to on
??? Launch the application
??? Go to settings -> General -> Keyboard -> International -> Keyboards -> Japanese -> enable emoji

Again, I have not tried the above tactic and have heard that there will be a frostyplace update soon if you can wait a few days without your emoji icons or updating your firmware. :) Best of luck and do feel free to continue to post comments about your findings.

  2. There we go. I just hadn’t made it to a page with emotes on it yet. Looks like it worked for me. Now it’s time to annoy all my friends.

  5. Best .99 cent app yet, thanks Justine! And no, your friends do not need to have the app on their iPhone for it to work, I just checked. I wonder if it works with Blackberrys and the like, anyone?

    Thanks Again! :D

  8. Woohoo! ?????? Took me about 3 attempts loading/playing with the app for the emoji keyboard to appear. One thing I did alter was my standard keyboard from English (UK) to English. Not sure if I needed to, but after that it worked. Also, can confirm that the iPhone recipient of your text doesn’t need to do anything to make the icons appear. They’re just there! ???

  10. My only question is if you’re sending a text to someone who doesn’t have an iPhone will the emoticons show up? Last thing I was is to spend $0.99 that sends Jap characters to my friends. :S

  16. Oh no Justine…I’m worried that this cool trick may have a dark side…unless it was just bad timing for me. Something weird/not good happened.

    Here’s what I did:

I turned off my iphone to take an undisturbed nap, set it into the cradle, for some reason when I did that it turned itself back on, so I held the top button to turn it off again while still in the cradle . About an hour later now….Went to turn it back on and see if I had any messages during my nap and i got the screen that shows the itunes logo and a usb cable telling me to connect to iTunes…the unlock area for Emergency calls was showing up in Spanish.

Just connected it to iTunes and it said “iPhone is Activated” so I assume when I turned it off it became deactivated somehow. It HAS to be related to this…the timing is just way too on point.

All of my stuff came right back up but had I been out and this happened the only thing I could do would be to go home and connect to iTunes (you mean, no iPhone access? I think I would go insane)

I just removed the app……and as cool as the icons are, i’m scared now…I think I might turn off the Japanese emoticon keyboard too because I dont think the iPhone is into this…somethings definitely not right

I tried to duplicate the problem AFTER deleting the app (but leaving the keyboard on) and it didnt do the same thing so maybe it was something with that app. I’m not sure. But

  17. Hi hellodon, I’ve actually had that happen a few times before this app was ever even released. I think it might have something to do with your cell reception at a certain point in time. I’ve also had it happen right after I’ve synced my iPhone. With a restart, it’s back to normal.

Hope you guys are enjoying it! Let me know if you run into any issues or anything. Would love to hear — so far everything is working fine for me. Doing as sync now.

  22. So far so good after my “incident”…Haha. The only issue now is getting used to the #/symbol key being half the size it used to be ???

Do the symbols work in this comment? ????????????

Also for those that asked…I deleted the app after and the symbols are still in place

Thanks for the tip! Definitely freaked a bunch of people out sending them msgs with the pics hehe

  23. Do other people (who don’t have this `hack’) with an iPhone see the emoticons as well, or do they have to do the same procedure?

  24. Why don’t apple make this available for all languages? Surely they realise that it’s not just the Japanese that use emoticons? I use them all the time, they are essential in conveying the meaning of text messages, especially as, in English at least, a sentence can have two/three completely different meanings depending on the way they are said.

  34. I watched your video, and finally got it to work. Best .99 I have spent on an app so far! Thanks Justine!

For those who are still having trouble:
I had to click around a while and read like 4 or 5 stories, and don’t forget to switch between the RSS feed section and the chat section icons on the bottom of the app. The emoji option appeared after I did all of that.

  35. Got it to work (with Swedish language). Thanks Justine :-)

The catch may be a click on the bottom right button.

Now, why is this available in a Chinese app, and what secret API does this app use to enable the emoji keyboard?

I told my girlfriend to buy it and give it a try and that shit didn’t work for her either. Am I supposed to do anything cus to my understanding the articles just pop up as soon as you launch the app. We want our money back!!!

  54. Dear Angry,

This didn’t work for me either at first (I’m in Ireland) and I wasn’t seeing anything in the RSS side, only the chat side. So I tried a few things:

Click every single link on the chat side
Change region format to United States
    Language to English (not UK)
Finally, go to the keyboard settings for Japanese and you should see the emoji option. Voila!

Some or all of these things made this work for me, hope it works for you as well!!!

  55. Pingback: GEARFUSE » Emoji: Turn Your iPhone Up To 11

  56. Angry – The RSS Feeds do not have to show up. Just let it run it’s course. After a few messages, go and check your Settings/General/Keyboard/Japan. The Emoj should be there so you can turn it on.

That’s it. You’ll now have Emoticons in your apps.

  57. iJustine, that was an awesome tip, thank you very much. I tried the vcard trick before but that doesn’t enable the handy keyboard shortcuts.
Downloaded the japanese App, played around as you said and it works just fine on my 3G and my iPod touch 2G. I’m really curious how many copies the developer sells just because of this trick. He probably can’t believe his luck ;)

  58. I wish people would research and read more carefully before they start asking so many questions or making so many assumptions.

Emoji is a protocol supported ONLY by a select few carriers IN Japan. For Emoji texting, emailing, etc to work it has to be received by a device that is also on an Emoji supporting carrier which would mean their device supports Emoji too.

The protocol is embedded in the phones used by the carrier. Since Apple is clearly not a carrier but does happen to have their device with an Emoji carrier in Japan, the iPhone/iPod firmware has the necessary protocol embedded in it already.

The issue is getting Emoji to activate on your Apple iPod/iPhone. For whatever the reasons (technical ones) running the Frostyplace app, makes the Apple firmware think that it is currently being run on the Japanese carrier, and that in turn, makes the menu item appear in the International settings of the iPhone/iPod.

As long as you have firmware 2.2 or newer this app will activate Emoji on your iPod/iPhone. No, it does not have to be an iPhone 3G.

NO, your friends without iPhones/iPods will not be able to see these icons UNLESS they happen to have a cellphone purchased from and activated by an Emoji supporting Japanese carrier.

The icons when used in email will only appear to the reader if read on an Emoji enabled device, ie another iPod/iPhone with firmware 2.2 or better, or another Japanese smartphone. Apple Mail (desktop not iPhone/iPod) does not support Emoji. Emoji is specific to the firmware of the device.

Yes there are other ways to get Emoji activated, but personally I think that this is the best choice, even if it costs $.99. First, you’ve not had to hack your phone in anyway. Your using an app that Apple has screened and deemed not to be malware and safe for distribution. Even though it’s free, I’d be wary of downloading unknown files (vcf or not) from the internet and assuming they’re safe. And lastly, even if a firmware update disables it, I’m willing to bet that running the app again will result in it coming back, unless Apple has specifically targeted the technical “glitch” allowing it to happen.

I have an original 4gig iPhone with the latest firmware. Works perfect. I too could not get the RSS button (left) to ever reveal anything. I browsed through several of the feeds from the right button. Turn my phone off and back on. And the Emoji setting was present in the International menu.

  59. I Justine I purchased the App but even with wi fi I don’t seem to be able to get up any articles only an empty screen. What gives?

  60. Can’t get any articles either, on either tab at the bottom.

I updated to 2.2.1 before downloading the app. Could this be why?

  61. What if the RSS and Chat windows are blank? Occasional two line pop-up message with a response button (likely “OK”). Tries to refresh, but still nothing. Did my resets, fiddled with keyboard settings to no avail… No Emojis for me!

And FrostyPlace is a Chinese (not Japanese) RSS app for the Taiwan Macintosh community website FrostyPlace.com, which currently ranges from super-slow to unresponsive. So perhaps all the Emoji-enablers have slashdotted the source…?

  63. Does not work if you have already updated to the new 2.2.1 so make sure you do this trick before you update.

  64. there is something up with the site (frostyplace). maybe too much traffic. i cant get any feeds to load.

  66. I have not gotten it to work on my iPhone 3g with the newest 2.2.1 update nor on my brothers with the most recent iPod Touch update. I have done all that everyone suggested. I cant get the RSS side, so i fool with the other and after many power on/off, resets, reinstalls, i still dont see anything.

Is this because of the update?

  67. i can verify that the 2.2.1 update does NOT break emoji from working if you have already activated them via frostyplace prior to the update.

however it does sound like installing frostyplace AFTER updating to 2.2.1 doesn’t work. hope this clears up any confusion :)

again, install frostyplace, activate emoji, THEN update to 2.2.1

  76. I can’t get this to work!

I downloaded frostyplace, but when I run it, after the splash screen it pops a dialog in Chinese, and I can only “OK” it. When I tap the RSS icon at bottom left, the network indicator just spins and spins, and no articles appear (the article page has just blank lines). If I tap the chat looking bubble icon on the right, I get articles, and I can read each one. That wasn’t enough to enable it.

I see others have this issue.

  77. Yes, it works if you installed it w/ 2.2

But if you install 2.2.1 first (like I did.. I only found out about this last night), you’re ****ed.

    This sucks.

  78. How can i get this after the firmware update?
Any suggestions? …cause it doesn’t work for now, can’t see any loaded articles in it. After refresh, still empty. However i get a message but i can’t understand it.

  79. I’m sooo bummed!! Heard about this off the MacBreak weekly podcast! DAMN!! I did the update first and then tried the FrostyPlace. I tried restore back to the iphone 2.2 update, but no luck! I guess I’m left with using the clunky address book method…

  80. frostyplace won’t unlock the emoji if you upgraded to 2.2.1

    BUT

“touch dial emoji” (another app in the appstore) DOES unlock the emoji, even if you are on 2.2.1.

down side is that it’s $3.99 instead of $.99

  81. The developer has posted an update to FrostyPlace (version 1.1.2) to the App Store, it is currently waiting for Apple’s review.

  98. As of this morning, the FrostyPlace app in the iTunes store has REMOVED the text where they state an updated version is awaiting Apple’s review. The app is still at version 1.1.1. I don’t know if this means the release is imminent or if it means Apple rejected the 1.1.2 update.

  99. its not working for me! i clicked on more than 5 stories but when i go to japanese there is no emoji!!! what am i doing wrong!? please help anybody!

  100. I finally got emoji icons working under 2.2.1 by using the $3.99 Touch Dial Emoji app. Works great with other iPhone users, HOWEVER……

I have discovered that emoji icons do NOT play well with non-iPhone models here in the US. If I send a text (SMS) to someone with a Blackberry or Razor and included an emoji icon in the text, their carrier does not deliver the text message at all. They get NONE of the text. It’s as if I never sent it!

Regular texts (without emoji characters) work just fine with non-iPhone models. But include a single emoji icon and the text goes into the big black hole in the sky and never gets delivered.

So, iPhone users… if your non-iPhone friends haven’t been responding to your cute emoji messages, now you know why!

  110. Typing Genius is currently the **ONLY** app that works to enable emoji on iPhones if you DID NOT have emoji enabled prior to updating to 2.2.1 firmware AND you downloaded the apps before February. So, I have an iPhone, updated to 2.2.1, but those other apps like Spell Number and Touch Dial Emoji, etc. had the emoji stuff disabled by Apple so that when I tried to use them today (March 20th) – nothing happened. Typing Genius is the ONLY one that still works.

  111. I had emoji using frosty place.
But had lost it when I had a speaker problem (common Iphone problem, the one where the phone thinks you have the headset on when it actually doesn’t and it won’t play any sound through the speakers).
Upon resetting the settings on the iphone. I noticed among many other things, that my apps were all over the place and I had LOST my emojis!
So I’ve decided to reinstall frosty place but it didn’t work for me.
I googled around and found a solution to this.
There’s a FREE application called Spell Numbers on the App Store.

    With the instructions above.
    That worked for me TODAY.
I got my emoji back!!! YAY!
