iPhone HDR camera update

Because I was looking so nice today *sarcasm* I thought I’d take this opportunity to test out the new HDR camera feature that is in the iPhone iOS 4.1 update!

As you can see, it definitely made a difference pulling out the shadows in my beautiful un-brushed hair! lol

I can’t wait until I leave the house and test it out in the real world! I’ll be sure to update a photo here when that happens!

Did you update your iPhone yet? In addition to this cool HDR feature, you’ll also get access to Game Center, iTunes show rentals, and the ability to upload HD video directly to youtube/mobile me from your phone!

  1. i have a 3gs so no hdr for me, i like the no HDR more, its darker i think the HDR version was too bright :)

  2. I don’t think the HDR works well with people, washes things out too much.

I highly suggest you try HDR with a sunset or high-lighting cloud shot, turns out amazingly well :)

  3. Hmmm, definitely pulled out the shadows, but it also desaturates the color quite a bit…
I’m sure it will work better in more suitable outdoor situations.

Unfortunately, I’m still locked into my Verizon contract until christmas, but I’ll jump to AT&T and grab an iPhone instantly after. Hopefully white ones will be out by then.

  4. Currently downloading as I type this. Can’t wait to try out the HDR features!

Justine, will you be using Game Center? I want to add you when I get it!

  5. Odd. What is HDR again?

To me looks like “color balancing” + desaturation, both of which can be found in GIMP and Photoshop. Unless it does both dynamically as in videomode, I see nothing spectacular.

  6. I am not a big fan at all of the HDR feature. I think it washes out all the colors from the shots. I am a photographer that has played around with HDR on a DSLR camera and the iPhones iteration is not cutting it for me. I have tested it indoors and out and it does a decent job of indoor low light shots but outdoors are horrible!! Totally washing out the colors and blowing the images out! Im not really convinced the camera is actually taking three separate images as opposed to just taking one then over exposing the levels a bit! Anyway….so thats my POV on it! :)

  7. I find that the HDR is best in situations where there is a really bright light that would normally wash out the shot. You actually started with pretty good lighting so it’s hard to see the benefit. Try taking a pic of your monitor. There’s a huge difference.

  8. I think the hdr works really well. Its meant to get better portraits on the iphone anyway. So to those that were expecting those totally stylized hdr are just ridiculous. Better skin tones too :) keep rockin justine :D

  9. I updated to 4.1 a few hours ago, I like the HDR but its not best for all photos, a few looked better with it off. Gamecenter might be fun but none of my friends have an iphone, so nobody to play with :( The rentals might be bad for me, I’ll probably end up spending too much money on them at school, especially in physics lectures lol.

  10. Hey iJustine I just got the update too! (me love my iphone 4) And I love the HDR Photos, and I also love how you can use ping directly through the iTunes app! It’s magical! (I’m such an Apple geek!)

    P.S.
Since I have an iPhone 4, I was wondering….. would you have FaceTime with me? Please email me if you will do it! :)

    Thanks you,
    Ryan

  11. So if I get an iPhone, I would look awesome too? Oh boy, I probably will have a girlfriend too!! and maybe even get invited to parties too!

Just kidding, but your pics look great, both of them.

  12. Great video. Check out the documentary The Winnebago Man it talks about the dude behind the Youtube viral video Winnebago Man. You’d love it :-) .
